Pioneers Sweep Roos

Pioneers Sweep Roos

The Alfred State baseball team swept a pair of games at SUNY Canton on Saturday. The Pioneers, winners of five of their last six, won the opener 5-2 and the nightcap 10-8.

Jake Remington (Letchworth) tossed a complete game eight-hitter in the opener to propel the Pioneers to the victory. He allowed just one earned run, walked one, and struck out five to improve to 3-3 on the year.

The Pioneers offense collected just three hits in the game but took advantage of eight Kangaroo walks. Pedro Mora (Manhattan/AP Randolph) drew a bases loaded walk and Chris Borden (Scotia-Glenville) followed with a sac fly to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the 2nd. In the 3rd, Alfred State scored an unearned run and then added two insurance runs in the 7th on a bases loaded walk to Nicholas Padley (Sweet Home) and a sac fly by Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond).

Seth Douglas collected a two-out RBI triple and scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the 7th to break up the shutout.

The Pioneers used a seven run 2nd inning and solid relief pitching from Brady Sass (Caledonia Mumford) to win the nightcap.

David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) hit a sac fly in the 1st to give the Pioneers an early lead but Canton tied it up scoring an unearned run in their half of the inning.

In their seven-run 2nd, Alfred State collected five hits and three walks. Robert Cardona (Harlem/All Hallows), Mora, and Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) collected RBI singles, Zuber collected a RBI on a fielder's choice, Dylan Lewis-Ellison (Whitesville) drew a bases loaded walk, and Jordyn Confer (Tioga, PA) capped the scoring with a two-run single. Canton answered right back with five of their own to cut it to 8-6.

In the 3rd, the Pioneers scored a run on a double play ground out and a RBI single by Martinez but the Kangaroos equaled their output in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-8.

The rest of the way the relief pitching from both teams kept each other off the board. The Kangaroos sent the tying run to the plate with two outs in the 7th but Sass induced a pop-up to second to end the contest.

Confer was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Cardona and Mora were each 2 for 3 with a RBI. Martinez was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and Zuber picked up 2 RBI. Sass pitched 5.1 innings to earn the victory out of the pen. He allowed five hits, two earned runs, and six walks while striking out two. The Pioneers were able to work around 12 walks in the contest.

Jeremy Baez was the lone Kangaroo with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.

Alfred State and Canton wrap up their season series tomorrow with a single 9-inning contest. The Pioneers have won the last four match-ups and lead the season series 4-2.
