Pioneers Wrap up Spring Trip with Wild 14 Inning Affair

The Alfred State baseball team wrapped up their spring trip with a 6-5, 14-inning loss at West Virginia Tech. Ryan Hedges (Arkport) started and pitched nine strong innings but did not factor in the decision. 

Austin Baker (Canisteo) put the Pioneers on the board in the top of the 2nd inning when he singled to center field, scoring Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia). The Pioneers came back with two more runs in the top of the 3rd inning when Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) singled down the right field line scoring Robert Cardona (Harlem). Jordyn Confer (Tioga, PA) later hit a sac fly to right field scoring Franz.

The Golden Bears answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Josh Hudson brought home three for the Golden Bears on home run to left field. Cody Miller scored Austin Lucas on a bunt single to first base. 

Runs were hard to come by for both teams until the Pioneers scored one run in the 9th to tie the game at 4-4. Jose Martinez (Queens) grounded out to second base scoring Michael English (Livonia).

The Pioneers regained the lead in 10th when Chris Borden (Glenville) singled home Dylan Lewis-Ellison (Whitesville) The Golden Bears didn't fold as they came back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 10th to tie the game back up at 5-5. H. Rodriguez singled to left field scoring Trevor Weaver.

Trevor Weaver later singled home the game winning run to left field in the bottom of the 14th inning scoring Cody Miller.

The Pioneers recieved three hits on the day from Nicholas Padley (Sweet Home). Lewis-Ellison and Jordan Wheaton each picked up two hits in the game for the blue and gold.

Ryan Hedges (Arkport) pitched nine innings for the Pioneers striking out four, scattering 12 hits in a no decision for the Pioneers. Brady Sass (Caledonia-Mumford) pitched 4 2/3 inning for the Pionners striking out three.

The Pioneers are slated to be back in action on Thursday vs. Corning CC.
