Pioneers pick up first win vs. D2 St. Michael's, fall in game two

Jake Remington (Letchworth) threw a complete game as Alfred State defeated St. Michael's 6-2 in the opener of a doubleheader with the Knights. The Knights took the nightcap 15-2. Remington struck out six and walked one, while allowing zero earned runs to register the Pioneers first victory of the season. 

Alfred State jumped out of the gate in the bottom half of the 1st inning when Matthew Nawrot (Clarenece) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. In the 2nd, the Pioneers added four more runs keyed by RBI singles by Nawrot, Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton), and Nicholas Padley (Sweet Home). Jose Martinez (Queens) also hit a sac fly

The Knights put up two runs in the top of the 3rd inning, but never managed to put anything together after that. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th when Angel Collazo (Bronx) singled to center field to score Cullen Franz (Cazenovia).

Nawrot and Wheaton each contibuted two hits on the day. Remington moves to 1-1 on the season after today's impressive outing on the hill. 

In the nightcap, the Knights jumped out to a early lead and never looked back. They scored three in the 1st and after the Pioneers cut the lead to 3rd with two runs in the 2nd, St. Michael's scored six in the 4th and six more in the 6th to secure the split.

Chris Borden (Glenville) and Austin Baker (Canisteo-Greenwood) collected RBI for the Pioneers. Alfred State was held to six singles in the game.

The Pioneers now head to West Virginia Tech for a 12:15 p.m. contest on Sunday as they wrap up their spring break trip.
