Lady Spikers Take Season Opener

The Alfred State volleyball team earned a 25-18, 25-8, 19-25, 25-14 victory over Penn College on Friday night to open up the 2016 season. On the evening, the Lady Pioneers recorded 12 service aces and had a hitting percentage of .309.

Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) led the Lady Pioneers with 13 kills, 11 digs, and four aces. Jessica Padley (Sweet Home) finished with nine kills, Grace Hall (Ellicottville) had eight kills, and Shaina Griffin (Portville) chipped in seven.

Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) passed out 21 assists and recorded six digs.

Breana Hayward led Penn College with nine kills while Jordyn Smeltzer finished with seven kills and 11 digs.

The Lady Pioneers connected on 46 kills on 110 attempts. They also recorded four solo blocks and six assisted blocks on the day.

The Lady Pioneers are right back at it on Saturday when they head to D'Youville for a tri-match. Alfred State takes on the host Spartans at 11 a.m. and Cazenovia at 1 p.m.
