Lady Pioneers Split at ACAA Championships

The Alfred State volleyball team split a pair of games at the ACAA Championships in Chicago, IL on Saturday. The Lady Pioneers raced to a 3-0 sweep of Finlandia (MI) but saw Illinois Tech rally to earn a 3-2 victory.

Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) and Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) each recorded 10 kills in the 25-16, 25-14, 25-16 victory over Finlandia. Godfrey added eight digs. Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) recorded 34 assists and six digs, Madison Webster (Corning) led the way with 13 digs, and Jessica Padley (Sweet Home) finished with seven kills and eight digs. The Lady Pioneers hit .395 in the contest while Finlandia hit .000. 

In the championship match, Alfred State started fast and took the first two sets, 25-9 and 25-15 before the Scarlet Hawks rallied for 25-22 and 25-19 victories to force a deciding 5th set. The Lady Pioneers led 5-1 early on in the deciding match but IIT marched back and took the set 15-12.

Godfrey led the team with 15 kills, Hamilton recorded 14 kills, and Grace Hall (Ellicottville) had 12 kills. Szpaicher passed out 48 assists, Webster had 16 digs, and Padley had nine kills, six digs, and two service aces.

Irena Grauzinis led the Scarlet Hawks with 18 kills and 18 while Courtney Darling passed out 30 assists. 

The Pioneers hit .260 in the contest while IIT hit .140. Alfred State struggled with 12 service errors while the Hawks had 11 aces.

The blue & gold (24-5) will now shift their focus to next week's USCAA Championships. They will battle NHTI (9:30 a.m.) and Carlow (2 p.m.) on Thursday in the first day of action in Virginia Beach, VA.
