Lady Spikers Suffer First Setbacks

The Alfred State volleyball team suffered their first setbacks of the season on day one of the Lycoming Tournament. The Lady Pioneers lost a five set battle with Gettysburg and then fell 3-0 to the University of Rochester.

In a back and forth battle with Gettysburg the teams traded sets. The Bullets won the opener 25-22 while the Pioneers took set two by the same score 25-22. GC won 25-18 in set three before Alfred State won 25-19 to force a deciding fifth set. Gettysburg took a early 3-0 lead in the deciding set and never looked back. 

Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) had a monster game. She finished with 16 kills (.429 hitting percentage) and five blocks. Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) finished with 13 kills and 13 digs, Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) passed out 46 assists and had 15 digs, and Madison Webster (Corning) led the team with 38 digs. Jessica Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) added 10 kills and 17 digs.

The Lady Pioneers finished the contest with 58 digs and recorded a .181 hitting percentage. The blue & gold only registered seven aces on the night.

Laura Bergin led the Bullets (12-6) with 26 kills while Stephanie Blair pssed out 51 assists and had a team high 19 digs. Gettysburg recorded a .240 hitting percentage.

Returning back to the court after the long battle with Gettysburg, the Lady Pioneers never got going vs. the U of R. The Yellowjackets earned 25-15, 25-15, 25-14 victories.

Godfrey recorded 10 kills and nine digs in the match while Valerie Intini (Rochester/Eastridge) led the team with 12 digs.

Alexandra Goldman led the Yellowjackets with 16 kills, Aimee Kohler passed out 32 assists, and Meghan Connor led with 16 digs.

The blue & gold continue play at the Lycoming Tournament on Saturday with a pair of matches. They take on Wilkes at 10 a.m. and Lycoming at Noon.
