Lady Spikers Split on Day Two of Wilkes Tournament

The Alfred State volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of the Wilkes Tournament. The Lady Pioneers fell 3-2 to Moravian and then defeated Wilkes 3-1. 

In the nightcap victory over Wilkes (25-20, 20-25, 25-15, 25-11), Jessica Padley (Sweet Home) and Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) led the way with 11 kills each. Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) added nine kills and eight digs, Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) passed out 32 assists and added 15 digs, and Madison Webster (Corning) led the team with 16 digs.

The Lady Pioneers hit .344 on the day and recorded 13 services aces (Padley led the way with five).

In their opening match of the day, the Lady Pioneers fell behind early dropping the first two sets, 29-27 and 25-23. They rallied for 25-25 and 27-25 wins but Moravian took the deciding 5th set 15-13.

Hamilton led the way with 16 kills and four blocks while Godfrey finished with 14 kills and 15 digs. Szpaicher passed out 48 assists and led the team with 27 digs, Webster recorded 26 digs, and Padley recorded 12 kills.

The Lady Pioneers (21-4) hit .202 in the contest but was slowed down by 13 service errors.

The blue & gold return home next week for a pair of games. They host Houghton on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) and Cazenovia on Friday (7 p.m.).
