Pioneers Quick Start Doesn't Hold Up

The Alfred State baseball team jumped out to a three run lead in the top of the 1st inning but couldn't maintain the lead for long. For the second straight day Scranton took advantage of timely hitting and Pioneer miscues in the field. The Pioneers eventually fell to Scranton 10-5 in game two of their spring trip.

In the top of the 1st inning Jose Martinez (Newtown) connected on a RBI doubled to left center, Rafael Perozo (St. Raymond) followed with a RBI double off the right center field wall, and Andy Pichardo (Academy of American Studies) picked up a RBI single to center.

Scranton manufactured a four run 2nd to gain the lead for good. They picked up three hits, a sacrifice fly, and took advantage of three Pioneer miscues. In the bottom of the third inning, Scranton plated their fifth run utilizing a timely hit and run to increase their lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the 5th inning they added three more runs to make it 8-3.

The Pioneers were able to cut into the lead in the top of the 6th inning when Pichardo connected on a RBI single.

Scranton added two insurance runs in the 7th to make it 10-4 before Pichardo connected on a RBI single in the 8th to pick up his third RBI of the game.

Pichardo led the Pioneers with three RBI singles. Both Perozo and Martinez collected two hits including RBI doubles.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow at 6 p.m. when they take on Principia at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC.
