Penn College Downs Pioneers

The Alfred State bats never got going as they fell to Penn College 5-2 and 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex at Houghton College. The Pioneers were held to just eight hits by Wildcat pitchers in the doubleheader.

In the opener, the Pioneers stranded 11 runners and was unable to hold on to an early lead. Nick Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) and and Dan Woodward (Honeoye) lifted sac flies in the 3rd inning to put the blue & gold up 2-0.

Penn College scored an unearned run in the 4th and took the lead on a two-run single by Dylan Scaringi in the 5th. The Wildcats added insurance runs in the 6th and the 7th. The Pioneers loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th but Max Bair got out of the jam to preserve the victory.

Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4. Cole Weachock and Carlos Rodriguez each collected three hits for the Wildcats.

In the nightcap, Penn College scored on a Deric Ellerman fielder's choice in the 2nd and took advantage of a throwing error in the 3rd to add to the lead.

The combination of Trevor Dolin, Aaron Palmer, Jed Blankenhorn, and Andrew Gilbert held the Pioneer bats to just three hits on the day. Woodward collected two of the hits (2 for 3) for Alfred State.

Brady Sass (Caledonia) was tough on the mound again but took the hard luck loss. He tossed 6.1 innings allowing six hits and one earned run.

The Pioneers are back in action on Friday when they host Hilbert in a 2 p.m. contest.
