Comebacks Come Up Just Short

The Alfred State baseball team put together two valiant comeback attempts but both fell just short in a Tuesday doubleheader vs. Albertus Magnus. The Pioneers lost 11-9 in game one and 10-9 in the nightcap.

Albertus Magnus put the Pioneers in another early deficit as they scored four runs in the top of the 1st inning, six in the top of the 3rd and an insurance run in the 5th. The Pioneers would only recover two of those runs until the bottom of the 7th inning when they managed to put together a seven run innnig that brought the tying run to the plate with two outs.

Thomas Shofi (Carmel) led the offense in game one as he collected three hits, including a solo homer, two runs scored, and a RBI. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) and Andy Pichardo (Academy of American Studies) both collected two hits in the loss. Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) had a pinch hit two RBI triple in the bottom of the 7th.

Relievers Rafael Perozo (St. Raymond) and Andrew Weigman (Genesee Valley) steady the ship with solid work. Perozo struck out five in 3.2 innings of work while Weigman came in and recorded the final two outs of the game.

In game two the Pioneers went back and forth with Albertus Magnus. The blue and gold scored three runs in the 2nd but that was erased in the top of the 3rd inning when Albertus Magnus came up with four runs of their own. Alfred State came back with three more runs in the top of the 4th inning. The Falcons plated three more runs in the 5th to regain the lead 7-6. The Pioneers came back with two in the 6th, but again Albertus Magnus answered with two in the bottom portion of the 6th inning.

In the top of the 7th inning the Pioneers were able to tie the game back up at 9-9 but a two-out walk-off single by Ted Gravel ended the game and completed the sweep for the Falcons.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers were led offensively by Shofi who went 3-4 with a double, triple, and three RBI. Nick Geyer (Newburg) and Pichardo added two hits and a RBI in the game. Franz tallied the other RBI.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow at noon against Albertus Magnus at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC (Please note change from original schedule).
