Pioneers Roll to Sweep of D'Youville

The Alfred State baseball team collected 20 hits and drew 20 walks as the swept a doubleheader from D'Youville, 16-2 & 10-0, on Saturday afternoon at Niagara University. The Pioneer pitching staff held the Spartans to just nine hits on the day.

The Pioneers scored in every inning of the opener except the 2nd. Dan Woodward (Honeoye), Nick Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home), and Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) all delivered RBI singles in the 1st. 

After the Spartans cut it to 3-1, Padley connected on a solo homer in the 3rd. In the 4th, Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) scored on a wild pitch and Andy Pichardo (Corona/Academy of American Studies) drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) added a 2-RBI single in the 5th followed by a RBI double by Pichardo and a RBI hit by pitch by Woodward. Patrick Ball (Tonawanda) drew a bases loaded walk and scored along with Pichardo and Robert Cardona (Harlem/All Hallows) on a bases clearing double by Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond).

The Spartans plated another run in the 6th but the Pioneers added to their lead with two more in the 7th. Conner Odonoghue (Avon) scored on a wild pitch and Ball collected a RBI single.

Franz, Perozo, and Martinez were all 2 for 4 while Padley was 2 for 5 in the game. The Pioneers collected 14 hits and drew 10 walks in the game.

On the mound Nick Mahoney (Cleveland, OH) earned his first collegiate victory on the mound. He tossed six innings allowing just four hits and two runs. He walked five and struck out two.

The Pioneers continued their offensive attack in the nightcap. The blue & gold took advantage of nine more walks and six errors to plate runs in every inning except the 2nd.

Thomas Shofi (Carmel) started a big offensive game in the 1st when he lifted a solo homer to center. An error allowed a run to score in the 3rd while the Pioneers put the game out of reach in the 4th with four runs. Pichardo hit a sac fly, Shofi had a RBI single, and two more runs scored on another error.

In the 5th, Shofi had a RBI double and another two runs scored on an error. Padley scored on another error in the 6th and Jesse Swan (Campbell Savona) lifted a sac fly in the 7th.

Shofi finished the day 3 for 4 with 3 RBI while Perozo earned the victory on the mound with 5.1 innings of work. He allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 10. Andrew Weigman (Genesee Valley) tossed a scoreless 1.2 innings to cap the game.

The Pioneers and Spartans continue their four-game series on Sunday when they battle at Pioneer Park. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 1 p.m.
