Pioneers Fall Short To Principia

The Alfred State baseball team fell 6-2 to Pincipia as they continued their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. It started as a back and forth affair, but the blue and gold couldn't generate enough timely hitting to take advantage of some potential big innings.

Principia scored in a single run in the 1st, but the Pioneers answered back in their portion of the 1st inning knoting the game at 1-1. Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) led off the inning with a single, stole second, advanced to third on the throw and scored on a Robert Cardona (All Hallows) RBI ground out.

Principia reclaimed the lead 3-1 in the top of the 2nd inning when Bryce Murray and Parker Davidson collected RBI singles. PC expanded their lead in the 4th with a single run and added two more in 5th on a 2-run homer by Zach Grennie.

Cardona cut the lead to 6-2 with a RBI single but the Pioneers couldn't capitalize on a bases loaded opportunity in the 7th to get any closer. The Pioneers left eight runners on base in the game.

The Pioneers were led offensively by Conner Odonoghue (Avon). He finished 4-4 with four singles. Franz finished the day going 2-5 and Cardona collected both RBI.

Kyle Kuzma (Waverly) was stellar out of the pen keeping the Pioneers in the contest. He allowed three hits and struck out three in three innings of scoreless work.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back tomorrow as they battle Albertus Magnus in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Cal Ripken Experience.
