Miscues Cost Pioneers

The Alfred State baseball team collected 21 hits in a doubleheader vs. Penn State Behrend but seven errors proved costly as the Lions swept the Pioneers, 11-8 and 8-4. The Lions improve to 25-13 on the year while the Pioneers are now 12-21.

Brandon Bergstrom (4 for 4), Scott Sada (3 for 4), and Nathan Noe (3 for 3) led Behrend in the opener. The trio finished 10 for 11 with 4 RBI for the Lions. The Lions scored two in the 2nd and 3rd, plated three in the 4th and 5th, and scored a single run in the 6th. 

Thomas Shofi (Carmel) had a RBI single in the 3rd while Robert Cardona (Harlem/All Hallows) and Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) delivered RBI singles in the 4th. Heading into the final inning the blue & gold trailed 11-3 but rallied to score five and had the tying run in the on-deck circle when Sada recorded the final two outs. Danny Doran (Irondequoit) drew a bases loaded walk, Michael English (Livonia) had a RBI single, and Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) delivered a long bases loaded 3-RBI double.

Franz and Jesse Swan (Campbell Savona) were each 2 for 3 for the Pioneers in the opener. The blue & gold made three errors and left ten runners on base in the opener.

In the nightcap, Matt Wolczko gave the Lions the lead in the 2nd with a RBI single. David Boehme had a RBI single after a costly error and scored when he stole home in the 3rd to make it 3-0.

English got Alfred State on the board in the 4th with a RBI single and Nick Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) hit a sac fly that Wolczko made a diving catch on to make it 3-2. Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) gave the Pioneers their first lead of the day in the 5th when he delivered a two-RBI single to center.

In the top of the 6th, Behrend took advantage of three Pioneer errors. They sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs on only two hits. The Pioneers couldn't muster any more offense after the Lions big inning.

Perozo finished 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Shofi was 2 for 3. Franz finished 2 for 4.

The Pioneers are slated to travel to Medaille on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Mavericks.
