Pioneers and Highlanders Split a Pair of Extra Inning Contests

Alfred State and Houghton split a pair of extra inning contests on Wednesday evening. The Pioneers took the opener 5-4 in 11 innings while the Highlanders won the nightcap 4-3 in eight innings.

Thomas Shofi (Carmel) delivered a two-out double down the left field line to break a 4-4 tie in the 11th. Kyle Kuzma (Waverly) recorded the final three outs in order to cap an impressive eight inning relief appearance to seal the victory.

Houghton took a 1-0 lead in the 1st but the Pioneers tied it in the 2nd on a RBI single by Shofi. The Highlanders retook the lead with two runs in the 3rd before Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) tied the game up with a two-run triple to the right centerfield gap.

In the bottom of the 6th, Houghton regained the lead but Dan Woodward (Honeoye) sent the game into extra innings with a two-RBI single in the 7th. Both teams had chances in extra inning but neither team could plate a run until the 11th.

Shofi finished the day 3 for 6 with 2 RBI, Woodward was 2 for 3 with a RBI, and Baker was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI. Kuzma tossed eight innings allowing five hits and no earned runs to earn the victory. He walked one and struck out one.

In the nightcap, Brady Sass (Caledonia Mumford) and Garrett Alread locked horns in a pitching duel. Both pitchers tossed seven very effective innings.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 4th when Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) laced a RBI double. Houghton tied it up in the the bottom of the inning.

In the 8th, Shofi delivered another clutch hit to break the 1-1 tie. Shofi lifted a long fly ball that hit the top of the fence and plated Pedro Mora (Manhattan/AP Randolph). Michael English (Livonia) made it 3-1 when he scampered home following a throwing error.

In the bottom of the 8th, the Highlanders took advantage of four walks and a hit batsmen to plate three runs and walk-off with the split.

Sass tossed the first seven innings for the blue & gold. He allowed just four singles, one earned run, and four walks while striking out nine. Alread allowed three hits and two earned runs in 7.1 innings of work. He walked two four and struck out eight.

Shofi was the lone player in the game with multiple hits in the nightcap, finishing 2 for 4.

The Pioneers are slated to host Medaille on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Pioneer Park.
