Pioneers Split with Medaille

The Alfred State baseball team split a doubleheader at Medaille on Sunday. The Pioneers took the opener 6-5 but fell 17-9 in the nightcap.

The Pioneers used a six-run 2nd inning to take control of the first game. David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) hit a three-run homer and Thomas Shofi (Carmel) hit a bases clearing three-RBI double.

Medaille rallied with one run in the 3rd, three in the 4th, and one in the 6th but was unable to get the equalizer. Jake Remington (Letchworth) earned his third victory of the season with the complete game effort.

Zuber was 2 for 2 with 3 RBI, Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) was 2 for 4, and Shofi finished with 3 RBI.

In the nightcap, Medaille scored nine runs in the 1st inning and led 16-0 after four innings before the Pioneers clawed back into the game with a seven run 5th inning. Pedro Mora (Harlem/All Hallows) got the blue & gold on the board with a sac fly. Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown), Danny Doran (Irondequoit), and Garrett Mack (Avon) collected RBI singles and Jesse Swan (Campbell Savona) connected on a bases clearing three-RBI double. Martinez cut the lead to 16-9 with a two-RBI double in the 6th but the Pioneers couldn't get any closer.

Martinez finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI while Shofi was 2 for 3.

The Pioneers are back at it on Monday when they host Houghton in a single nine-inning game on Monday afternoon. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
