Pioneers Drop a Pair of Close Contests

The Alfred State baseball team left 17 runners on base as they fell 4-2 and 3-2 to Keuka on Tuesday afternoon.

Keuka got on the board in the 1st inning of the opener when Tyler Krowiak delivered a RBI single to left. Krowiak added to the Wolf Pack lead in the 5th with another RBI single before Dakota Skinner drove in two with a single.

The Pioneers got both of their runs in the 6th inning. David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) collected a RBI single to center and Nick Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) had a RBI ground out. Alfred had runners at 2nd and 3rd but could not plate the tying run.

James Matthews held the Pioneers to seven singles in the game in his complete game victory. He struck out seven batters. No Pioneer had multiple hits in the contest and the blue & gold stranded seven runners on base.

Kyle Dailey delivered a one-out RBI single to left in the 8th inning to lift Keuka to the game two victory. Jake Redding scored the game-winning run after starting the inning off with a bunt single. He went to second on a sac and scored two batters laters on Dailey's hit.

Keuka took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on a squeeze bunt by John Rizzo. Zuber tied it up in the 3rd with a RBI single to left. Rizzo collected another RBI with a single through the left side in the 4th. Padley singled to right in the 6th to score Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) and tie the game.

Thomas Shofi (Carmel) and Padley were each 2 for 3 for the Pioneers while Zuber was 2 for 4. Brady Sass (Caledonia Mumford) had another solid effort on the mound allowing just one earned run in 7.1 innings of work. He allowed seven hits, walked one, and struck out seven. The Pioneers offense left 10 runners on base.

The Pioneers are slated to close the 2016 season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Pitt-Bradford.
