Pioneers Complete Weekend Sweep of D'Youville

The Alfred State baseball team completed a four-game weekend sweep of D'Youville with 13-7 and 6-4 victories over the Spartans on Sunday afternoon. The blue & gold scored 45 runs in the four-game series.

In the wild opener, the Pioneers put the game out of reach with a eight run 2nd inning. Alfred collected 15 hits, drew six walks, and was hit by three pitches. Every Pioneer starter had at least one hit and at least one RBI.

Heading into the decisive 2nd inning the Pioneers trailed 4-2. Cullen Franz (Cazenovia), Andy Pichardo (Corona/Academy of American Studies), Thomas Shofi (Carmel), Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond), and Nick Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) hit consecutive RBI singles. Perozo scored on a wild pitch, Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) had a RBI ground out, and Robert Cardona (Harlem/All Hallows) capped the inning with a RBI single. The Pioneers collected eight hits and sent 13 batters to the plate in the 2nd.

Dan Woodward (Honeoye) led the offense with a 2 for 3, 1 RBI day. Cardona was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) was 2 for 4 with a RBI, and Perozo was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI.

Jake Remington (Letchworth) tossed four innings to earn the win. Kyle Kuzma (Waverly) got the final six outs to continue his impressive spring. 

D'Youville scored an unearned run in the 1st to grab the early lead in the nightcap. The Pioneers took the lead in the 2nd on a RBI ground out by Conner Odonoghue (Avon) and a RBI double by Baker. Baker added to the lead with a RBI triple in the 4th.

The Spartans retook the lead with a 2-RBI single by Travis Macrides and a RBI double by Nick Stimpfel in the 5th but the Pioneers answered back with a RBI double by Shofi and a RBI ground out by Woodward. Franz added to the lead in the 6th with a RBI bunt.

Baker was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 2 with 2 RBI. Brady Sass (Caledonia Mumford) earned the win with a complete game outing. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out seven.

Alfred State is back in action on Tuesday when they head to Dunn Park to take on Elmira in a 6 p.m. contest.
