Football Five: Alfred State vs. Utica

The 2021 Alfred State season kicks on Saturday when the Pioneers host Utica. Here are five things to know prior to the 5 p.m. kickoff at Pioneer Stadium.

  • This is the first game for Alfred State since November 9, 2019, when the Pioneers defeated SUNY Maritime 21-17. Utica played a pair of games in the Spring 2021 season vs. Alfred University. AU and Utica split the games with each team winning on the road.
  • Alfred State is predicted to finish 4th in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. The Pioneers play four consecutive non-conference games before opening up ECFC play vs. Maritime on October 9th.
  • Around two dozen Pioneers have some college playing experience. A quartet of those players, Aaron Jenkins, Cade Marks, Rylie Van Fleet, and Brock Weist, have been named captains. Marks, Van Fleet, Weist and Shy'rel Broadwater are the team's four returning All-ECFC from the 2019 season.
  • This is the second meeting between Alfred State and Utica. The two teams met in 2001. The game was the first in program history for Utica.
  • Saturday's 5 p.m. kickoff will cap a busy day of home events at Alfred State. Four of the six Pioneer fall teams will be in action at home. Volleyball hosts Cazenovia (10 a.m.) and Houghton (2 p.m.), Women's Soccer hosts St. Vincent at 11 a.m., and Men's Soccer hosts St. Vincent at 1:15 p.m.
    • Tailgaiting will be allowed in the parking lots outside Pioneer Stadium - Tailgaiting Rules and Regulations
