Football Five: ECFC Play Begins

After a week off, the Alfred State football team begins Eastern Collegiate Football Conference play with a battle with Maritime. Opening kickoff is slated for Noon.

  • Meeting History: The Pioneers and the Privateers meet for the 4th time. Alfred State defeated Maritime 21-17 in the 2019 regular season finale. The Privateers have a 2-1 advantage in the series.
  • Last Game: Alfred State defeated Defiance 35-28 two weeks ago while Maritime won their first game of the season with a 19-16 win vs. Castleton.
    • Jake Palmer scored from two yards out with 15 seconds remaining to lift Alfred State to a 35-28 victory at Defiance College. Defiance scored on the opening kickoff but four interceptions, three by Rylie Van Fleet, led to four scoring drives and a 28-7 lead. The Yellow Jackets rallied and tied it but the Pioneers put together a nine-play drive in the final minutes to win. Van Fleet finished with a team high six tackles to go along with his three interceptions (101 yards of returns). Aaron Jenkins finished 13 for 26 for 172 yards and two scores and he rushed 28 times for 94 yards and two scores. Ben Ba (Harlem/Park East) was the leading receiver with four catches for 81 yards.
    • Trailing by four with just under three minutes remaining, Maritime marched 79 yards down the field for the winning score vs. Castleton. Kevin Murphy capped the game-winning, 10-play drive with his second touchdown of the day, an 11-yard strike that David Keogh placed perfectly into the corner of the end zone to give the Privateers (1-3, 1-0 ECFC) the 19-16 victory. Keogh finished 26-for-48 passing with 360 yards and three touchdowns.  Murphy had five catches for 40 yards and two scores, while Nicholas Morman gained 104 yards rushing.  Sean Hart paced the defense with 10 tackles, Aboulay Konate made nine tackles, and James Varga tallied six solo tackles.
  • Game Notes:
    • Rylie Van Fleet was recognized by D3football.com, the ECFC, and Alfred State with honors following his big defensive performance vs. Defiance. The Pioneers forced five turnovers in the game. 28 of the 35 points scored by Alfred State were results of Yellow Jacket turnovers.
    • Aaron Jenkins had an all-around solid game the last time out. He was named ECFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
    • Success on 4th down was key for Alfred State as they converted on four attempts. For the year, the Pioneers are 39% on 3rd down (23/59) attempts and 80% on 4th down (4-5).
    • Maritime's 19 points was a season high last week. In their first three games they were held to just one score.
    • Privateer graduate school quarterback David Keogh is completing 49.71% of his passes and has passed for just under 1,000 yards (989) on the year. He has five touchdown passes but has been intercepted seven times. He is the only player on Maritime to attempt a pass.
    • Nicholas Morman had his biggest game of the year last week going over 100 yards vs. Castleton. He is averaging 3.9 yards per carry. As a team, Maritime has not scored a rushing touchdown.
