Fast Five: New England Bowl Preview

Alfred State travels to Dartmouth, MA to play in their first postseason contest of the NCAA DIII era. The Pioneers will take on the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in one of the two New England Bowl contests.

  • Meeting History: This the third meeting between the two schools. The Pioneers opened up the 2018 and 2019 seasons vs. each other. UMD took the last meeting 54-7 in 2019.
  • Last Game: Alfred State clinched a share of the ECFC crown and a spot in the New England Bowl with a 37-15 victory at Dean while UMass Dartmouth won 28-7 over Plymouth State to run their winning streak to five games.
    • The Pioneers used a big 2nd half to defeat Dean College 37-15. Trailing 12-10 at the half, Alfred State outscored the Bulldogs 27 to 3 in the 2nd. Aaron Jenkins continued his magical season with another huge game. He rushed 28 times for 185 yards and two scores (1 and 2 yards) and was 11 for 28 for 270 yards and two scores (73 and 28). Roman Napoleon had a big day catching six passes for 194 yards and two scores. Jeremiah NixonBrock Weist, and Nuhsar Mike all had five tackles while Joel Smith had four tackles and 2.5 sacks. Anthony Allen intercepted a pass. Full game story

    • Three first-half touchdowns proved to be the difference in the Corsairs 28-7, Senior Day victory over Plymouth State. Dante Aviles-Santos led the team in both passing and rushing. He was 14-20 with 117 yards passing and two touchdowns, while adding another score and 75 yards on the ground. Marvens Jean was responsible for 152 yards of total offense and finished with a receiving touchdown, while Luis Gonzalez registered 118 total yards with one rushing TD. JP Mason led the team with 10 tackles, six of those being solo, while Chris Gomes and Malik Gibson each recorded nine tackles. Full Game Story

  • Game Notes:
    • Both teams are coming into the game with winning streaks. Alfred State has won four straight and have won six of their last seven contests. UMass Dartmouth has won five straight and six of their last seven.
    • This is the first appearance for both teams in the New England Bowl. Merchant Marine is taking on Western New England in the other game of the two-game bowl series.
    • Aaron Jenkins put together another offensive performance last week. He passed for 270 yards, rushed for 194, and accounted for four touchdowns. He has passed for 2,211 yards and 14 scores on the season and is nearing the 1,000 yard rushing mark (943 yards and 15 scores).
    • Roman Napoleon took over the receiving yard lead last week with his big game. He now has 32 catches for 783 yards. Shy'rel Broadwater has 33 catches for 706 and Ben Ba has 34 catches for 445.
    • Dante Avilles-Santos has passed for 1,905 yards and 21 scores this year (55.19% and 148.68 quarterback rating). His spreads the ball around with seven different receivers with 10 or more catches. Douglas Machado leads the team with 33 catches, 608 yards, and nine scores. 
    • Luis Gonzalez leads the rushing attack (216.8 yards per game) with 836 total yards on the season. He has scored seven times.
    • Joel Smith, Brock Weist, Nuhsar Mike, and Rylie Van Fleet have been key to the Pioneer defense. Smith has 74 tackles and 5.5 sacks, Weist 41 tackles and 4.5 sacks, Mike 56 tackles and 4.5 sacks, and Van Fleet 56 tackle and four interceptions.
    • Opponents are 51 for 129 on the season on 3rd downs and 9 for 27 on 4th down
    • JP Mason leads the Corsairs with 82 tackles (49 solo). Javien Delgado has 63 tackles, Josh Lacrete leads the team with 6.5 sacks, and Marcus Elysee leads the team with five interceptions. UMD has 13 interceptions and seven fumble recoveries on the year.
    • Dawson Fontaine has been a weapon for the Pioneers. He is 8 for 11 on field goals and 32 of 36 on PAT's. He has also had two successful on-side kick.
