Hot Shooting Leads Pioneers Past SUNY Poly

Alfred State put together a great shooting performance to pick up their first win during the 2016 portion of the season, 89-71 over SUNY Poly. The blue & gold shot 58.3% from the field and 57.9% from behind the three-point arc. 

The Pioneers got out of the gate quickly and never looked back. They built a 27-point lead in the 1st half before SUNY Poly cut it to 43-26 at the break. An early 2nd half run put the game completely out of reach and the Pioneers led by as many as 35 before SUNY Poly cut the lead in the final minutes of the game.

Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) was 5 for 6 from three point land and led the Pioneers with 19 points. Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) dished out a season high 15 assists on the afternoon, while chipping in eight points.  Justin Wallace (Mount St. Michael) added 10 points, Dante Jordan (New York/Law & Public Service) chipped in nine points and 11 boards, while, Adam Fezza (Southampton) finished with nine. 

The Pioneers were 28 from 48 from the field and picked up 27 assists on the afternoon. They connected on 11 of their 19 three-point attempts and hit 22 of 35 foul shots. The blue & gold forced the Wildcats into 23 turnovers and held a slight 34-33 advantage on the boards.

SUNY Poly was led by Malik Johnson's 11 points and six boards. Quayshaun Mitchell finished with nine points and eight rebounds while Tyler Taverne chipped in nine.

The game featured 61 fouls and 41 turnovers.

The blue and gold will be back in action on Monday at 2 p.m. as they take on Cazenovia.
