Big 2nd Half Run Dooms Pioneers

SUNY Canton used a 21-2 second half run to break open a close contest en route to a 76-56 victory over Alfred State on Saturday afternoon. Alfred State led 36-34 before the decisive run.

Canton went into the break with a 34-33 lead after each team traded leads in the 1st half. Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) hit a three-pointer two minutes into the 2nd half to give the Pioneers a 36-34 lead but the Pioneers would be held to just two points in the next eight minutes. During that stretch, the Kangaroos took control of the contest with 21 of their own points. After the big run, Canton didn't allow the Pioneers any closer than 11, 61-50, the rest of the way.

Edwards led the blue & gold with 17 points while Dior Dixon (Brooklyn/Bishop Loughlin) came off the bench and had 14 points. D'ondre Davis (Brooklyn/William Grady) had seven points and five rebounds while Tyler Elliott (Perry) grabbed a team high 11 boards. The Pioneers shot only 28.1% from the field (18 for 64) on the day but did hold a 49 to 47 advantage on the glass (18 offensive boards).

Romario Fletcher had a monster day for the Roos. He finished with 23 points and 14 boards. Vonallen Pickett had 18 points and seven rebounds while Sam Annorh added 15 points. Canton shot 41.8% (28 for 67) from the field, connected on six three-pointers, and shot 63.6% (14 for 22) from the line.

The Pioneers hit the road for the final time of the season on Tuesday when they battle Davis College at 7 p.m.
