Three Straight for Pioneers

The Alfred State men's basketball team earned their third straight victory with a tight 65-63 victory over SUNY Delhi on Saturday afternoon. The blue & gold trailed by as many 10 in the 2nd half but rallied to grab back the lead and held on during a wild finish.

The Pioneers started fast and led by as 13, 25-12, halftway through the 1st half. Delhi finished the half on a 16 to 5 run and trailed just 30-28 at the break. The Broncos continued their solid play with a 12-0 run to start the 2nd half and grab their largest lead of the game. The Pioneers chipped away and tied the game at 52-52 with just over seven minutes remaining.

Delhi took back the lead with a 5-0 run but a lay-up by Marvin Cyrus (Washington DC) with 2:07 remaining tied the game back up at 61-61. Cyrus gave the Pioneers the lead for good when he hit two foul shots moments later. Delhi had chances to tie or win the game down the stretch but missed two shots on their second to last possession and a last second shot after a steal with 0.9 seconds remaining did not fall.

Cyrus and Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) each scored 16 points for the Pioneers. Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) finished with nine points and five assists while Tyler Elliott (Perry) had eight points and eight boards.

The Pioneers shot 35% from the field, 41.2% from the three, and 57.1% from the foul line (10 for 14 in the 2nd half). On the boards, Alfred State held a slight 48 to 45 advantage.

Chiamaka Browne led the Broncos with 16 points and eight boards while Mike Guity chipped in 16 points. Delhi shot 36.9% from the field, 24% from three, and 60% from the foul line.

The blue & gold head to Penn State Behrend on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
