Lady Spikers Tripped up at Houghton

The Alfred State volleyball team lost two tough matches at the Houghton on Saturday. The Lady Pioneers fell 3-1 (17-25, 23-25, 25-19, 30-32) to Houghton and 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23, 8-15) to Geneseo.

After a slow start vs. Houghton the Lady Pioneers tried to mount a comeback. The Highlanders were able to avoid a decisive fifth set with a back and forth 32-20 victory in game four.

Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) led the Lady Pioneers in the opener with 18 kills and 21 digs. Lera Braun (Waterloo) had 42 assists and 17 digs, Jessica Padley (Sweet Home) had 10 kills, and 14 digs, and Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) chipped in 17 digs.

Hattie Burgher led Houghton with 12 kills and 21 digs while Anna Coryell passed out 35 assists.

Alfred State and Geneseo traded games back and forth with the Knights taking the decisive fifth game. Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) led the way with 15 kills, Madison Webster (Corning) had 25 digs, Braun passed out 41 assists, and Szpaicher had 23 digs.

Paige Pendelton led the Knights with 11 kills, Bethany Vandermaeid passed out 45 assists, and Danielle Sayler was credited with 15 digs.

The Lady Pioneers, ranked #2 in the USCAA, is now 15-3 on the season. The blue & gold are back in action on Friday when they host Keuka at 7 p.m.
