Lady Spikers Finish 4th at USCAA Nationals

The Alfred State volleyball team finished 4th at the USCAA National Championships. The Lady Pioneers fell 3-0 to St. Mary of the Woods (IN) in the semifinals and then was downed 3-1 by Rochester (MI) College in the 3rd place match.

The Pomeroys rallied to take the first set 25-22 and then earned 25-18 and 25-22 victories to advance to the national championship game. McKenzi Kumpf led the way with 14 kills, Mary Alvanos passed out 29 assists, and Madeline Howes led the team with 19 digs. St. Mary of the Woods hit .183 on the day and collected 66 digs.

Grace Hall (Ellicottville) led the Lady Pioneers with seven kills while Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) finished with five. Madison Webster (Corning) had 17 digs, Jessica Padley (Sweet Home) and Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) each had 11 digs, and Lera Braun (Waterloo) passed out 20 assists. Alfred State hit just .062 on the game and had five service errors.

In the 3rd place match, Alfred State started off fast defeating the Warriors 25-15. Rochester won a tight second set 25-23 and then went on to complete the victory with 25-20 and 25-21 wins.

Shannon Murdock led Rochester with nine kills while Paige TenBrink finished with eight kills and 24 digs. Kayla Loepp had 26 digs while Emma Walters recorded 13 assists and 12 digs. The Warriors collected seven service aces and recorded 101 digs in the contest.

Hamilton led the Lady Pioners with 14 kills and 3.5 blocks. Webster collected a game high 25 digs and Braun passed out 40 assists and collected nine kills. Padley and Hall each chipped in eight kills. Alfred State collected eight aces but was slowed down by 10 service errors.

Florida College repeated as the USCAA National Champion with a sweep of St. Mary of the Woods. The Falcons did not lose a set in the tournament.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Hamilton was named to the All-Tournament team. She collected 60 kills and hit .261 for the weekend. She also collected 5.5 blocks.

Alfred State was making their second consecutive trip to the USCAA National Championships. They finished 4th in the 2014 as well.

The Lady Pioneers (27-10) now will wait for the seeding for the ECAC Tournament. Alfred State hosted the 2014 ECAC Tournament.
