Pioneers Open up Play in Myrtle

The Alfred State baseball team fell twice as they opened up play at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC.  In the opener, Chesapeake scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th to walk-off with a 12-11 win.  Montgomery (PA) County CC took and early lead and never looked back in a 9-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Pioneers held an 11-9 lead vs. Chesapeake heading into the final frame.  An error followed by three consecutive singles led the Skipjacks to a come-from-behind walk-off victory.

Nicholas Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) led the Pioneer 10-hit attack with a 2 for 2, 5 RBI day.  He connected on two-run homer in the 2nd and had a three RBI double in the 6thJordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI including a solo homer.  Steven Stapleton (Williamsville/Sweet Home) was 2 for 4 with a RBI, Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) was 2 for 3, and Tim Weidman (Wayland Cohocton) drove home two with a RBI single in the 6th.

In the nightcap the Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings and stymied any Pioneer rallies.  The blue & gold left nine runners on base.  Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) was 2 for 2 while Wheaton was 2 for 4.  Steve Pinell (Bronx/Queens Vocational) collected a pinch hit triple.

The Pioneers (1-9) return to action on Monday when they take on Camden (NJ) County College at 9 a.m. and Frederick (MD) CC at Noon.
