Pioneers and Panthers Split Extra Inning Affairs

Alfred State and Tompkins Cortland CC each won an extra inning contest in their Region III Division III match-up on Tuesday afternoon at Pioneer Park.  The Panthers won the opener 7-5 in eight innings while the Pioneers won the nightcap 4-3 in nine innings.

In the opener, Alfred scored five runs in the 2nd inning to grab a 5-1 lead but the Panthers chipped away with two runs in the 3rd and two in the 5th to tie the game up.  The Pioneers had numerous chances to grab back the lead but stranded runners in scoring position.

With runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs in the 8th, TC3 scored the game winning runs on a Pioneer infield error.

Tom Banicky (Orson, PA/Hancock) was 3 for 4 with a RBI to leaad the offense while Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) was 2 for 3.  Dylan Lewis Ellison (Rexville/Whitesville) had a two-run double.

Steven Stapleton (Williamsville/Sweet Home) took the loss but was effective in five innings of work out of the bullpen.  He allowed just one earned run while walking one and striking out four.

In the nightcap, Alfred scored three runs in the 3rd on four straight two-out hits to grab a 3-1 lead but the Panthers once again rallied and scored two in the 6th to tie the game up.

With darkness coming and the threat of a suspended game looming, Alfred started the bottom of the 9th inning with Nicholas Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) reaching on a catcher's interference.  Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) moved over pinch runner Lewis Ellison with a sacrifice bunt.  After a fly out, Eric Mehaffy (Lisbon) collected his fourth hit of the game to give the Pioneers the walk-off victory.

Mehaffy finished 4 for 5 with a RBI while Caldwell was 3 for 4 with a RBI.  Stephen Solomon (Harrisburg, PA) collected his first collegiate victory with a complete game victory.  He allowed two earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out 13.

The blue & gold are now 6-19, 4-4 Region III Division III on the year.  They continue their four-game series vs. TC3 on Thursday in Dryden.  First pitch of the DH is slated for 2 p.m.
