Pioneers Down Bunker Hill

Pioneers Down Bunker Hill

Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 7th to lift Alfred State over Bunker Hill (MA) CC 8-7 on Friday morning.  The Pioneers scored run in each of the final five innings of the game.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings.  Michael Durkin (Jeffersonville/Sullivan West) single home a run in the 3rd and Jordyn Confer (Sauquoit) singled home a run in the 4th.

Bunker Hill tied it with two runs in the 4th but the Pioneers exploded for four runs in the 5th. Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) had a 2 RBI triple and Caldwell had a RBI double in the inning.

The Pioneers scored an insurance run on a balk in the 6th inning but the Bulldogs rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie it up.  The rally was fueled by four Pioneer miscues.

In the top of the 7th, Wheaton singled to lead off and then stole second and third on consecutive pitches to set up Caldwell's game-winning sacrifice fly.

BHCC got a leadoff single in the bottom of the 7th but Confer recorded the final three outs to seal the victory.

Wheaton was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward Institute) was 2 for 3.  Caldwell and Durkin both finished with 2 RBI.

Confer picked up the victory with 1.2 innings of work out of the pen.  He allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings of work.  Steven Stapleton (Williamsville/Sweet Home) allowed three earned runs in 5.1 innings but did not factor in the decision.
