Pitching Dominates as Pioneers and Lazers Split

The pitchers dominated as Alfred State and Onondaga CC split a Region III Division III doubleheader in high winds on Thursday.  The Pioneers won the opener 1-0 in 10 innings and the Lazers won the nightcap 3-0.

Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) and Eric Spencer matched scoreless inning for nine innings until the Pioneers dented the scoreboard with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.  Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward Institute) was hit by a pitch and Eric Mehaffy (Lisbon) followed with a game-winning double to the right center gap.  Mehaffy has now delivered two walk off hits in each of the Pioneers last two victories.

Caldwell allowed just three hits, walked six and struck out 11 in his ten innings of work.  Spencer allowed eight hits, one run, one walk, and struck out eight in 9.2 innings.

Caldwell and Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) were each 2 for 4 at the plate.

In the nightcap, Anthony Brauchle held the Pioneers to just four hits in 6.2 innings of work to earn the victory.  Mike Sgroi recorded the final out to record the save.

The Lazers scored two in the 2nd on a two-run inside the park homer by Chris Davis and added an insurance run on a throwing error in the 3rd.

Caldwell continued his torrid hitting of late collecting three of the Pioneers four hits in the game and raising his batting average to .460 on the year.

The Pioneers step out of Region III Division III play this weekend and travel to Monroe CC on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Tribunes.
