Pioneers Walkoff to Complete Sweep

The Alfred State baseball team walked off with a 6-5 victory in game two of a Region III Division III doubleheader with Finger Lakes CC to complete the sweep of the Lakers.  Alfred won the opener 7-3 and now is 15-27 on the year and 13-10 in RIII DIII play.

The nightcap was a back and forth affair.  FLCC led 3-0 before the Pioneers tied it up at 3-3 with three runs in the 4th.  The Lakers took the lead right back in the 5th only to have Alfred take their first lead of the game with two in the bottom of the 5th.  A sac fly by Aaron Frieda tied it at 5-5 in the 6th.

After keeping the Pioneers off the board in the 6th, the Lakers were held scoreless in the 7th.  The first two batters of the Alfred 7th inning went in order before Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) connected on a single to left field which took a bad bounce and was misplayed and allowed Wheaton to circle the bases for the walk-off win.

Wheaton led the Pioneers with a 3 for 4, RBI day while Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward Institute) was 2 for 4.  Stephen Solomon (Harrisburg, PA) earned the win with a complete game effort.  He allowed nine hits, two earned runs, and three walks while striking out seven.

In the opener, Alfred scored three in the 3rd and two in the 4th to erase a 3-1 deficit.  Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) was 3 for 4 at the plate and tossed a complete game four hitter to earn his 4th win of the season.  He allowed two earned runs, walked three, and struck out seven.  Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) was also 2 for 3 on the day and Dylan Lewis-Ellison (Rexville/Whitesville) drove home two runs with a double.

The sweep avenges a pair of losses to the Lakers on Tuesday in the opening two games of the series.

Alfred returns to action on Saturday when they host Erie CC in another crucial RIII DIII doubleheader.  First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
