Pioneers Sweep Broome

The Alfred State baseball team evened up their Region III Division III record by sweeping Broome CC, 9-5 and 17-4.  The Pioneers are now 2-2 in RIII DIII play and 4-17 overall while the Hornets are 2-9 overall and 1-3 RIII DIII.

In the opener, the Pioneers had a 4-run 3rd inning that helped propel the team to victory. Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) was 3 for 3 with 4 RBI to pace the offense.  Nicholas Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) was 3 for 4 with a RBI while Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) was 2 for 4 with a 2 RBI.

Stephen Golombiewski (East Otto/Cattaraugus) earned the complete game victory.  He allowed four hits and three earned runs while walking five and striking out four.

In game two, the Pioneers scored four in the 4th to erase a 3-1 deficit and then scored four more in the 5th and put the game out of reach with seven in the 7th.

Tom Banicky (Orson, PA/Hancock) led the way with a 4 for 5 day with 3 RBI.  Jordyn Confer (Tioga, PA/Williamson) was 3 for 5 with 4 RBI and Caldwell was 2 for 4 with 4 RBI.

Vincent McDaniel (Arkport) tossed the first four innings allowing five hits and two earned runs to earn the win. He walked two and struck out two.  Steven Stapleton (Williamsville/Sweet Home) didn't allow a hit in two innings of work while Larry Blocho (Fillmore) got the final three outs.

The Pioneers and Hornets continue their four-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Alfred.
