Pioneers Complete Season Series Sweep of Corning

The Alfred State baseball team defeated Corning CC 9-7 and 17-2 on Thursday to complete the four-game series sweep of the Red Barons.  With the wins, the Pioneers are now 9-7 in Region III Division III play and 11-24 overall.

In the opener, Corning jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Pioneers bounced back and earned the win.  Steven Stapleton (Williamsville/Sweet Home) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Dylan Lewis Ellison (Rexville/Whitesville) was 2 for 4.  Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) was 1 for 1 with two runs scored.  Vincent McDaniel (Arkport) pitched 5.1 innings out of the pen to earn the win while Jordyn Confer (Tioga, PA/Williamson) got the final two outs to earn the save.

The Pioneers dominated game two to complete the sweep.  Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) was 2 for 2 with two runs scored while Wheaton was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI.  Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward Institute), Michael Durkin (Jeffersonville/Sullivan West), and Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) all collected two hits.

Confer picked up the win with three innings of no hit ball.  Larry Blocho (Fillmore) and Eric Mehaffy (Lisbon) both pitched an inning allowing one run each to close out the contest.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday when they host Jamestown CC in a crucial Regional match-up.  First pitch of the doubleheader is at 1 p.m.
