Pioneers and Hornets Split

The Alfred State baseball team opened up the home portion of their season by splitting a Region III Division III doubleheader with Broome CC.  The Hornets rallied for a 5-4 victory in game one while the Pioneers returned the favor with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in game two.

In the opener, Broome rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the 4th and scored the winning run on a double by Alex Yarton in the 5th.  The Pioneers had runners on base in the 6th and 7th but was unable to score the tying run.

Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI while Jordyn Confer (Tioga, PA/Williamson) was 2 for 2.  Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward Institute) had a RBI double.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers trailed 3-1 but fought back to tie it in the 4th and took the lead in the 5th.  Caldwell tripled home Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) and then came around to score on a Steven Stapleton (Williamsville/Sweet Home) single.

The Hornets cut it to 5-4 and had runners on the corners in the 6th when Stephen Solomon (Harrisburg, PA) came out of the pen and struck out a pinch hitter to end the threat.  BCC put a runner on in the 7th but stranded him on first.

Eric Mehaffy (Lisbon) tossed the first 5.2 innings allowing five hits and four runs.  Solomon recorded the final four outs to earn the save.

Caldwell finished was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Gonzalez was 2 for 4 with a RBI.

The Pioneers (5-18, 3-3 Region III Division III) return to action on Tuesday when they host Tompkins Cortland CC.  First pitch of game one of the four game series is at 2 p.m.
