Lady Pioneers Fall in Tight One

For the second straight game, the Alfred State women's basketball team let a lead slip away in the 2nd half as Keuka won a 55-54 decision on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Pioneers led 16-13 after the 1st and 30-25 at halftime. Keuka tied the game early in the 3rd and the teams finished the 3rd knotted up at 40-40.

Alfred State scored the first four of the 4th but the Wolves answered with seven straight of their own to retake the lead. A three-point play by Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) tied it but with just under seven remaining but Keuka scored the next five and eight of the next twelve to lead 55-51 in the final seconds. Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) connected on a three in the final seconds but the Lady Pioneers would not be able to get another scoring opportunity.

Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) led the Lady Pioneers with 18 points and nine rebounds while Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards. Minnie Robinson (Washington DC) scored six and passed out five assists.

The Lady Pioneers shot just 28.9% from the field, connected on only one three pointer (1 of 22), and hit 9 of their 12 foul shot attempts. The blue & gold did hold a sizeable 53 to 41 rebounding advantage.

Katie Stuart led the Woves with 14 points and seven rebounds while Courtney Boyea chipped in 11. Nichole Templeton led KC with 11 boards. As a team, Keuka shot 35.3% from the field, 30% (3 of 10) from three, and 47.1% (16 of 34) from the foul line.

The Lady Pioneers wrap up the 2016 portion of their season next Saturday when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA to battle Carlow University. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
