Chambers Qualifies for Nationals at Brockport Invite

Desmond Chambers (Rochester/Gates Chili) won the long jump and qualified for the NJCAA National Championships to lead the Alfred State contingent at the Brockport Invitational.  The Pioneer men finished 5th out of 16 teams that scored in the event.

Chambers winning leap of 7.26 m (23'10") earns him a spot at the NJCAA National Championships held March 1-2 at Texas Tech University.  His mark also establishes a new school record which was previously held by Wenley Louis (7.10 m).  Chambers was also 4th in the 60m dash (7.16).

Logan Phillips (Genesee Valley) was 2nd in the 400 (52.47) while Nate Andres (Arcade/Pioneer) was 4th (52.52).  Brian Edwards (Tri-Valley) was 5th in the shot put (14.09 m), Josiah Thomas (Rochester/John Marshall) was 7th in the triple jump (13.24 m), Brian Tubbs (Waverly) was 7th in the 500 (1:10.63), Alex Farrell (N. Tonawanda) was 7th in the 1,000 (2:42.75), and Zach Woodard (Adams Center/South Jefferson) was 8th in the 200 (23.73).

The 4x200 relay team of Chambers, Woodard, Tubbs, and Kyle Jones (Ransomville/Wilson) was 6th in 1:34.52 and is now 2nd fastest in school history.  The 4x400 relay (3:35.86) and the 4x800 relay (9:09.44) each finished 6th.

The Pioneers scored 52 points on the day and only trailed University of Rochester (121), RIT (118.5), Brockport (112.5), and Buffalo State (94).  Alfred was ahead of Geneseo (47), Alfred University (43), St. John Fisher (36), Hamilton (34), Utica (25.5), Nazareth (16), Roberts Wesleyan (16), Genseee Valley Harriers (11), Canada (10), Good Deeds (6.5), and Houghton (1).

Caitlyn Hotchkiss (Springville Griffith) was the top finishing female.  She was 9th in the 500 in a time of 1:27.53.  The Lady Pioneers did not score in the event where 13 teams competed.

Alfred heads to Ithaca College on Friday evening for the Ithaca Quad Meet beginning at 6 p.m.
