Pioneers Men in 1st After Day One of Regionals, Women 3rd

The Alfred State men's track & field team sits in 1st place after day one of competition at the 2013 Region III Championships.  The Pioneers have scored 66 points and lead 2nd place Herkimer by 22.

The Pioneers claimed the Region III title in three of the five events (hammer throw, discus, and 4x800) contested on the day.  

  • Rafael Ramirez (Parksville/Tri-Valley) won the hammer throw with a toss of 41.65 with his teammate Sam Sherwin (Williamson) was 2nd with a toss of 41.10.
  • Brian Edwards (Neversink/Tri-Valley) won the discus with a toss of 45.76 while Robert Howard (Syracuse/Henninger) was 2nd with a distance of 42.42.
  • The 4x800 relay team of Tylor Lehman (Wellsville), Zachary Hale (Rochester/Greece Athena), Kyle Jones (Ransomville/Wilson), and Alex Farrell (N. Tonawanda) won by crossing the finish line in 8:21.7.

Alfred's 66 points leads the way.  Herkime has 44, SUNY Delhi 40, Mohawk Valley CC 24, and Finger Lakes CC has yet to score.

On the women's side, Jennifer DeNovio (Guilderland) recorded the best finish with a discus toss of 28.97 to earn 2nd place.  The 4x800 relay team of Courtney Whetstine (Lewiston/Lewiston Porter), Caitlyn Hotchkiss (Springville/Springville Griffith), Megan Dillon (Angola/Lake Shore), and Billie Carroll (Rochester/Edison Tech) finished 2nd in 11:30.3.

Mohawk Valley leads the women's competition with 70 points followed by Herkimer's 53, Alfred's 26, and FLCC's 14.  SUNY Delhi has yet to score.

Action continues at 10 a.m. with the Region III Champion crowned by 6 p.m.
