Lady Spikers Sweep First Day of Wildcat Invitational

The Alfred State volleyball team won a pair on the opening day of the SUNYIT Tournament. The Lady Pioneers defeated the hosts 25-16, 25-11, 25-23 and then defeated Utica 23-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-12 to improve to 13-2 on the year.

Kay Pfleghardt (Tioga) led the way with 16 kills in the victory over SUNYIT. Lera Braun (Waterloo) passed out 31 assists and had six digs, Jess Ramsey (Tioga) led the way with 11 digs, and Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) chipped in five kills and five digs.

A trio of Lady Pioneers racked up double-digit kills in the four-set victory over Utica. Pfleghardt had 18 kills and 18 digs, Grace Hall (Ellicottville) had 16 kills, and Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) finished with 11 kills and 12 digs . Braun passed out 50 assists, Ramsey had 18 digs, and Szpaicher had 12 digs to go along with six kills.

The Lady Pioneers, ranked #3 in the newest USCAA poll, now have won ten straight matches.

Alfred State takes on Elmira at 11 a.m. and then SUNYIT at 1 p.m. in day two action of the Wildcat Invitational.
