Lady Spikers Finish 4th at USCAA Nationals

The Alfred State volleyball team finished 4th at the 2014 USCAA National Championships. The Lady Spikers fell 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 to Florida College in the semifinals and then were defeated by SUNY Canton 25-23, 13-25, 24-26 in the 3rd place match.

Janae Hamilton (Ellicotville) led Alfred State with eight kills while Kay Pfleghardt (Tioga) added six in the semifinal match vs. Florida. Lera Braun (Waterloo) had 18 assists and 10 digs, Jess Ramsey (Tioga) had eight digs, and Grace Hall (Ellicottville) had four kills.

In the 3rd place match vs. Canton, the Kangaroos won a tight first set 25-23 by scoring the last two points. They Roos controlled the second set and raced to a 25-13 victory. In the third set the Lady Pioneers led throughout and held a 24-16 lead before Canton scored the last eight points to win the set and the match.

Pfleghardt had 12 kills and 13 digs for Alfred St. Braun passed out 28 assists and 10 digs, Jessica Padley (Sweet Home) had 11 digs and six kills, and Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) had 16 digs. Ramsey led the team with 17 digs.

Alfred State is now 25-8 on the season and play their final home game on Wednesday when they battle Houghton. Fans are encouraged to wear black for the 7 p.m. showdown with the Lady Pioneers cross county rival.
