Lady Spikers Advance to USCAA Semis

The Alfred State volleyball team defeated Cincinnati Clermont 25-21, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20 in the USCAA National Championship quarterfinals to advance to the Final Four. The Lady Pioneers will take on #1 seed Florida College on Saturday at Noon.

Kay Pfleghardt (Tioga) led the way with 15 kills and 15 digs while Lera Braun (Waterloo) passed out 37 assists, had seven digs, and six kills. Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) finished with nine kills, Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) had 22 digs and three blocks, and Jessica Padley (Sweet Home) chipped in nine kills and 15 digs. Jess Ramsey (Tioga) had 14 digs.

The Lady Pioneers trailed in the first set but rallied for the victory. The Cougars led for most of the second set before Alfred St. won a back and forth battle in the third set. A-State took an early lead in the fourth set and held off a couple runs by the Cougars to earn the deciding victory.

Alfred State is now 25-6 on the year heading into their rematch with the Lady Falcons from Florida College. Florida defeated Penn State Fayette 3-0 in their quarterfinal match and is 5-0 during the USCAA Tournament including a 2-0 victory over Alfred St. in pool play. 

In the other semifinal the host SUNY Canton battles Rochester (MI) College. Canton swept Carlow and Rochester swept Berea in the quarterfinals.

The consolation match of the tournament will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday followed by the USCAA Championship game at 4 p.m.
