Week in Review:

Men's Cross Country: 2nd at AMCC Championships

Gavin Bathgate (East Rochester) defended his title as the men's cross country team finished 2nd at the 2021 AMCC Championships. Bathgate was able to cross the finish line of the muddy and sloppy 8k course at Alfred State in 29:25.01 to win his second straight AMCC Championship individual title. He finished just over 22 seconds ahead of Phoenix Myers from Penn State Behrend. 

As a team, the Pioneers finished 2nd with 40 points. Andrew Hvisdak (Orchard Park/Hamburg) was 10th (32:51.05). Ryan Weir (Schertz, TX) was 12th (33:22.58), Brian Clark (Bethpage) was 14th (33:35.94), and Aiden Bonomo (Manalapan, NJ) was 17th (35:24.06).

Women's Cross Country: 2nd at AMCC Championships

Running through the mud, the women's cross country team finished 2nd at the 2021 AMCC Championships on their home course.

Sarah Rivet (Shenendehowa) and Katie Watkins (Addison) led the Pioneers. Rivet was 10th in 31:30.90 and Watkins was 11th (31:31.65). Both earned All-AMCC honors with their finishes of the 6k course. Laura Ferris (Victor/Mercy) was 16th (32:01.95), Mattison Buckley (Wellsville) was 21st (34:52.04), Summer Kier (East Rochester) was 25th (37:06.67), and Anna Hersom (Byron Bergen) was 26th (37:07.25).

Football: 4-4, 3-1 ECFC

The football team evened their record and moved into a four-way tie in the ECFC standings with a 38-7 victory over Keystone on Saturday afternoon.

Joseph Alvarado (Queens) got the Pioneers on the board with 57 seconds remaining in the 1st quarter when he intercepted a Giants pass and returned it 79-yards for a score.  A pair of rushing touchdowns (8 and 19 yards) late in the 2nd quarter by Aaron Jenkins (Canfield, OH) gave ASC a 21-0 lead at half. Dawson Fontaine (Bensalem, PA) connected on a 20-yard field goal with 2:35 left in the 3rd quarter and Jenkins made it 31-0 early in the 4th with his third rushing touchdown. His 13-yard run capped an 83-yard drive. The Giants broke the shutout with 4:51 left in the game but Jason Salcedo (Staten Island) answered right back with a three-yard rushing touchdown to cap the scoring.

Jenkins finished with 122 yards rushing (three TD's) on 13 carries and was 8 for 12 for 126 yards passing on the day. Dylan Banks (Baldwinsville) carried the ball 10 times for 54 yards while Ben Ba (Harlem/Park East) caught four passes for 51 yards.

Nuhsar Mike (Syracuse/Leadership Academy) led the defense with 11 tackles (two for a loss). Rylie Van Fleet (Endwell) and Te'Hari Campbell each had seven tackles. Alvarado had five tackles to go along with his 79-yard interception return for a score.

Men's Soccer: 7-10, Advanced to AMCC Semifinals

The Pioneers defeated Hilbert 6-0 in their regular season finale to qualify for the AMCC Tournament. In their quarterfinal match-up the Pioneers downed Pitt-Bradford 2-0 to advance to the semis.

Five different Pioneers scored in the victory over Hilbert. Nuri Sarbudak (Pittsford Mendon) led the way with a pair of goals. Camren Larabee (Cuba Rushford) had a goal and an assist while Jean Baptiste Kagde, Hunter Hollock (Tonawanda), and Leng Van (Buffalo/Maryvale) scored for the blue & gold. Thad Grierson (Perry) recorded the shutout.

Sarbudak netted a goal in each half as the Pioneers downed #4 seed Pitt-Bradford. Sarbudak scored after getting a pass from Larabee in the 40th minute of the game and then scored on a long shot after getting a pass from Jack Leahy (Pittsford Sutherland). Grierson made five saves in net to earn the shutout.

The Pioneers head to #1 Medaille on Wednesday for a semifinal battle.

Women's Soccer: 4-10, 1-7 AMCC

Victoria Stuck (Bolivar Richburg) scored as Alfred State closed the 2021 season at Hilbert. The Hawks scored two 2nd half goals to earn the 2-1 victory.

Stuck got the Pioneers on the board in the 4th minute when she connected on a long shot to the upper corner after getting a pass from Lauren Bondgren (Avon). Alfred State outshot the Hawks 19 to 9 in the game.

Men's Swimming & Diving: 3-0

The men's swimming & diving team improved to 3-0 with a 164-130 victory over Penn State Behrend in their AMCC opener. Kellen Fletcher (Wrightstown, NJ) set two new school records in the victory.

Fletcher set new ASC NCAA era records in winning the 200 fly (1:56.59) and the 100 fly (51.80). Fletcher also won the 200 IM (1:59.80). Luca Aldewereld (Cleveland, OH) improved his school record in the 50 free by winning in 21.63.

Brianna Dixon (Brentwood, NH) won the 200 back (2:01.02) and was 2nd in both the 100 breast (55.15) and 200 IM (2:05.98). Westin Perry (Canisteo Greenwood) won the 100 breast (54.70) while Stuart Yates (Naples) won the 100 breast (59.75). The 200 medley relay team of Perry, Yates, Jazz Widney (Tulsa, OK), and Aldewereld won in 1:36.72 while the 400 free relay team of Parker Brod (East Aurora), Aldewereld, Yates, and Micah Schwartz (Ithaca) was 2nd in 3:20.07.

Austin Miller (Hornell) won the 1 m diving competition with a score of 231 and won the 3m with a score of 261.65.

Women's Swimming & Diving: 2-1

The women's swimming and diving team set a new school record in the 200 medley relay as the Pioneers swam at Penn State Behrend. The Lions were able to earn the 162-123 victory.

The relay team of Alyssa James (Pittsford Mendon), Mikaela Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer), Mackenzie Gillette (Elmira Notre Dame), and Madison Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer) won the event with a time of 1:56.61.

Mikaela Snayczuk won a pair of events. She won the 100 fly (1:07.34) and the 200 IM (2:24.42). She was also 2nd in the 200 breast (2:41.58). James won the 1000 free (11:57.27) and was 2nd in both the 100 back (1:07.03) and the 200 back (2:23.91), Madison Snayczuk won the 50 free (26.24) and was 2nd in the 100 breast (1:15.42) and the 100 free (56.52), and Gillette won the 200 fly (2:39.86).

Volleyball: 17-2, 7-1 AMCC

The blue & gold finished the regular season with a pair of victories, 25-11, 25-8, 25-15 over Hilbert and 25-22, 25-19, 25-22 over Pitt-Bradford. With the victories, Alfred State has earned the #2 seed for this week's AMCC Tournament.

Keturah Gregory (Laurel, MD) had a big week as she led the team with 21 kills and eight blocks. Alyssa Martin (Portville) had 12 kills, Nayomie Ferrer (Eastridge) passed out 46 assists and had 10 digs, and Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) finished the week with nine kills, eight aces, and 16 digs.

The Pioneers recorded a .236 hitting percentage this week and served 24 aces.

Wrestling:

The wrestling team starts their season this week with a pair of matches. They host Elmira on Wednesday before heading to Michigan to compete in the Adrian Invitational on Saturday.
