Athletic Department Hands Out End of Year Awards

The Alfred State athletic department celebrated the 2021-22 athletic year by hosting the annual End of Year Award ceremony.

PIONEER LEGACY AWARD: Given to the male and female athletes who have achieved success on and off the field throughout their career at Alfred State. The nominees have demonstrated Sportsmanship and Leadership, been involved in Civic Engagement activities, along with earning athletic honors during their career.

Honorees: Dylan Perlino (men's track and field) & Kiara Perkins (volleyball)

Perlino is a four-year member of the track & field team and a two-year captain.

He was the Pioneer Pride winner and voted most improved for outdoor track in 2018. In 2021 he finished seventh at Regionals in hammer throw and was an Academic All-American for outdoor. This season he has been honored with the CSAC field athlete of the week four times and the Alfred State Athlete of the week three times.

He has qualified for the All-Atlantic Regional Championships five times across three events. He holds the program record for hammer and is second All-Time in discus and weight throw. He currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division III in discus and will head to nationals on May 26th. Perlino has had just as much success off the field as well. Academically, he holds a 3.97 cumulative GPA and has been on the dean's list every semester. He was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honors in the spring of 2020, was a SUNY Chancellor's Award Nominee in the fall of 2021 and is a SUNY SAIL graduate.

He is a recipient of the James A Comstock scholarship for exemplary academic achievement in an engineering curriculum and an IFPS Certified Hydraulic Specialist. He is on the CSAC All-Academic team and an Academic Student Ambassador.

Prior to all these accomplishments, Dylan was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma (a type of cancer that is either bone or soft tissue) three days before he was supposed to move in for his sophomore year. He went through chemo and surgery over the next 10 months. He has been officially in remission since May 2019 and came back to school that fall and accomplished everything previously noted.

Perkins is a four-year staring outside hitter on the volleyball team. She was ACAA All-Conference in 2017 and 2018, was on the ECAC All-Tournament Team in 2021 and All-AMCC second team in 2021. She started in all 96 matches over her career. She is a two-time team MVP, two-time team captain and is in the Pioneer history books for multiple categories. She is second All-Time in career points per set (3.3), third All-Time in career points (1055) and career kills (862). Fifth All-Time in career aces (171) and eighth All-Time in career digs (707).

As a freshman she started in all 29 matches, and was the teams Rookie of the Year. As a sophomore she started in all 21 matches. As a junior she started in all 24 matches and was team CO-MVP. As a senior she started in all 22 matches and was team CO-MVP..

This past season she was ninth in the NCAA Division III in aces per set.

Off the court she earned a BA in Human Services Management and an AAS Social Sciences and was on the Dean's List in 2019 and 2020. She also served on SAAC for two years.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Given to the male and female athletes that have made the largest impact upon ASC athletics and exhibited good character in this school year.

Honorees: Kellen Fletcher (men's swimming and diving) & Madison Snayczuk (women's swimming and diving)

In his first year as a Pioneer Fletcher was an AMCC Champion in the 100 fly, 200 I.M, 400 free relay, 400 medley relay and 200 free relay. He is the first Alfred State swimmer to break an AMCC record, and he broke three; the 100 fly, 400 medley relay and 400 free relay.

He holds the program record in the 100 fly, 200 fly, 800 free relay, 400 free relay, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay and 200 I.M.

He earned AMCC first team All-Conference after scoring the most overall points in the entire Empire 8 / AMCC combined championships.

He won 6 events at the Oberlin Invitational and is undefeated in dual meet races this past season.

In her first year as a Pioneer Snayczuk was named AMCC Newcomer of the Year and was First team All-Conference. She was an AMCC Champion in the 50 free, 100 free, 400 Medley Relay and the 200-medley relay.

She scored the most points for a freshman (all teams) at the AMCC championship and scored the second most points of any woman at the AMCC Championships.

She holds the program record in the 50 free, 100 free, 400 free relay, 400 medley relay and the 200-medley relay. She had the most dual meet points scored on the women's team and most dual meet victories on the women's team.

Snayczuk is also on the outdoor track team and is No. 6 on the All-Time list for triple jump in her first season.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR AWARD: Are given to the male and female athletes who have made the largest impact upon ASC athletics and exhibited good character in their first year as a Pioneer.

Honorees: Sean Peterson (wrestling) & Keturah Gregory (volleyball)

In his first season as a Pioneer Peterson recorded 32 wins at 141 pounds, 16 of them by bonus points. He was the Wildcat Open Champion which earned him the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Rookie of the week. He was the runner-up at the John Summa Invite, finished third at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships and earned All-Conference honors. He was all-New York State after placing fifth, finished fifth at the Adrian Invite and was an NCAA All-Region honor with an 8th place finish.

In her first season as a Pioneer, Gregory ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III in kill percentage (.463). She led the team in all blocking categories, ranked first on the team in kill percentage and was second on the team in kills and points. She was named first team All-AMCC Conference and was Co-MVP for the Pioneers. Gregory is a dual major in interior design and business. 

A.D. AWARD: This award is presented to student-athletes who have exhibited success during competition, in the classroom, been involved with SAAC, community service, and supporting the Athletic Department. 

Honorees: Brittany Fisher (softball) & Katherine O'Buckley (women's cross country and track and field)

Fisher has a 3.41 GPA in sports management. She has assisted the sports information department on games days in many roles, has been a SAAC member since spring 2020 and is the AMCC National SAAC representative. She headed the Family Christmas Box community service project and was involved in Special Olympics & other departmental community service.

O'Buckley has a 3.93 GPA in Surveying & Geomatics Engineering Technology. She is the official game day photographer for the department and has been a SAAC member since fall 2020. She has participated in women's soccer, cross country & track & field. She was also involved in Special Olympics & other departmental community service

ACADEMIC AWARD: Honor the male and female athletes who have competed in athletics for at least two years, while achieving the highest overall grade-point average during that time.

Honorees: AJ Gartland, Stuart Yates, and Isabella Popoff

Gartland is a 5th year member of the baseball team and a three-year recipient of this award. He has a 4.0 GPA in Architecture.

Yates is a three-year member of the men's swimming & diving team. He has a 4.0 GPA in Architecture.

Popoff is a member of the women's soccer team and track & field team. She has a 4.0 GPA in Architecture

SAAC AWARDS: The Student Athlete Advisory Committee established two awards, the Play of the Year and the Iron Athlete. Members of SAAC nominated and voted on these awards.

Play of the Year: The men's 400 Free Relay team at the AMCC Swimming & Diving Championships.

This four-man team made up of Westin Perry, Kellen Fletcher, Luca Aldewereld & Jazz Widney set a new an AMCC record of 3 minutes and 5 seconds winning the last event of the AMCC Championships meet.  This win allowed the team to clinch the title against all AMCC & Empire 8 teams by 25 points.

Iron Athlete: This award is given to a student-athlete that has endured hardship and has persevered above and beyond their circumstances.  They epitomize hard work, effort, tenacity and grit.

Honoree: Dylan Perlino (men's track and field)

Pioneer Excellence Cup: Honors the team that has combined success in athletic achievements, academic excellence, and in civic engagement

Honoree: Wrestling

CHI ALPHA SIGMA: To be recognized a student-athlete must be in at least their 5th full-time semester and have a minimum of a 3.40 GPA.

Honorees: Cale Bartosch, Gavin Bathgate, Kenneth Carr, Laura Ferris, AJ Gartland, Megan Gridley, Blake Ilges, Jeff Jijy, Summer Kier, Owen Lansing, Fallon Lewis-Ellison, Dyaln Perlino, Jonah Prindle, Calesta Reigelman, Zach Rudewicz-Nepokroeff, Lily Schnell, Skylar Schaulis, Emma Taggart, Rylie Van Fleet, Dereck Walter, Lauryn Washington, Jonathan White and Emily Winter.

Graduation Cords were given to the members of Chi Alpha Sigma that were inducted in previous classes which include Cameron Howard, Camren Larabee, Cade Marks, Katherine O'Buckley, Dylan Perlino, Joshua Reding and Kathryn Watkins.

4-YEAR AWARDS: 4-year awards to our student-athletes that have competed at Alfred State four years.

Honorees: Brody Burdett, Te'Hari Campbell, Loujerry Etienne, Brittany Fisher, Mike Galton, AJ Gartland, Connor Hong, Cam Howard, Donte Jones, Emily Kelley, Alina Kisluk, Colin Kraeger, Camren Larabee, Zack Linderman, Caleb Maier, Alyssa Martin, Austin Miller, Anthony Miraglia, Kat O'Buckley, Kiara Perkins, Dylan Perlino, Josh Reding, Ryan Santiago, Skylar Shaulis, Katie Watkins, Brock Weist

WILLIAM HAVENS AWARD: Given to the person within the athletic department who has gone beyond the call of duty in making the greatest contribution in aiding the mission of the athletic department during the past year.

Honorees: Cathy Dimino and Justin Signorelli

Dimino is in her first year as the Administrative Assistant. She has taken on a number of tasks and is thorough with her work. She has been a great addition to the athletic department and supports the entire staff on a daily basis.

Signorelli is in his third year as head wrestling coach. He has assisted with many duties outside his role as coach to support the department. His efforts surrounding community service, the concession stand, and game management have been outstanding. 

PIONEER HONORS: This distinction is given to an individual that have gone above and beyond to aid the mission of the athletic department during the past year.

Honoree: Jon Nickerson

Nickerson serves as the college's Director of Facilities. He is a strong supporter of the athletic department and has helped the department in so many ways but to name a few - Orvis pool repairs, field maintenance, cross country trail grooming, gym roof repairs, scoreboard addition, baseball and softball dugouts, van transportation, and much more.
